Georgia Helvick
A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation is honored to recognize Georgia Helvick. Georgia is an amazing and generous volunteer who has given her heart and soul to help lung cancer patients overcome barriers to receiving timely care and good outcomes. She is one of our favorite energy bunnies and we couldn’t do our work without her!
Georgia lost her dear sister, Julie, on May 8, 2020, after a courageous 11-year battle with stage 4 lung cancer. Julie was just 58 years old when she died and had never smoked. It was a difficult journey for the family, but Georgia was at her sister’s side through it all and brought great comfort to Julie and her own family right until the end.
To honor and remember her late sister, Georgia now brings her bright light, contagious smile and loving personality to other lung cancer survivors who need additional support while they battle lung cancer. Georgia has delivered food, driven patients to medical appointments, volunteered for ABOH events, and more.
From Georgia: “My sister told me about ABOH starting a driving program for lung cancer patients. I didn’t hesitate to sign up as this was how I could support my sister and her battle with lung cancer. Together we signed up to offer rides to patients in need of transportation to and from their appointments. In my mind, this was simple! It didn’t take long, it got me out of the house, and I got to see different parts of the city. What I got in return was more than I imagined … interesting conversations, laughter, and a chance to meet someone new. Today, I offer these rides as a way to honor my dear sister who lost her battle. I want to continue to encourage patients, make them feel at ease when I know they are anxious, and get them to their medical appointments worry-free. SIMPLE, yet so rewarding!”
