PATIENT EDUCATION

Studies show that well-informed patients are better equipped to participate in decisions about their care and have better health outcomes. To help patients educate themselves, A Breath of Hope provides tools and resources such as the Midwest Lung Cancer Summit (held each Fall) and our online learning resources the Animated Patient’s Guide to Lung Cancer, available in English and Spanish. This resource provides patients and their families with more information about their lung cancer diagnosis and treatment options.

EDUCATION AND SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SURVIVORS & FAMILIES

ABOH offers virtual support groups for survivors and caregivers, as well as those who are grieving a loved one lost to lung cancer. Each group offers opportunities for learning, discussion, and support and is led by professional facilitators.

ABOH Virtual Support Groups

COMPANIONSHIP

ABOH peer-to-peer HOPE companions have experienced cancer and simply want to help others during their journey. The role of a Hope companion is to listen and offer companionship during the emotional roller coaster of a cancer diagnosis.

HOPE companions may provide support to patients and caregivers through texts, phone calls, coffee dates, and virtual or in-person meetings. Connecting with a HOPE companion who has experienced a cancer diagnosis can provide support and relief during the cancer journey.

careviver Testimony

“My husband found out he needed radiation for twenty consecutive days and even with our five adult children, finding rides was difficult. My kids had to take vacation time from work just to drive him to appointments. One day our nurse, Jody, handed us an A Breath of Hope brochure and said ‘They’re waiting for you to call.’ I called the office and gave them my husband’s treatment schedule. They matched us up with a volunteer right away. I thought, ‘oh boy this is a lifesaver.’ Our A Breath of Hope volunteers are just wonderful. They’re here on time and they’re friendly. There’s no guesswork. You don’t know how much of a lifesaver this program has been. We are so thankful.” – LeaAnn Eng
