2023 Midwest Lung Cancer Summit

WALK-IN REGISTRATIONS AVAILABLE ON SATURDAY, OCT. 21. Online registration is now closed.

The 2023 Midwest Lung Cancer Summit for patients, survivors, and caregivers is a one-day Saturday event offering classroom-style education about lung cancer, patient resources and tools to improve the journey, access to lung cancer experts, meals, massages, and networking opportunities for people living with lung cancer. While we encourage in-person attendance to give you access to experts, other survivors, and resources, this event is also offered virtually.

The Summit focuses on offering educational resources that have the power to improve quality of life and health outcomes. Scholarships are available to offset the $50 registration fee by emailing .

Jamie Schneider
Jaime Schneider MD., P.h.D. – Science brings new hope to people living with lung cancer

Dr. Schneider of the Massachusetts General Hospital, began her scientific training as an undergraduate at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where she earned her degree in Biology with a concentration in Biochemistry. She attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine as part of the Einstein Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), one of the nation’s oldest physician-scientist training programs. There, she earned her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees and developed expertise in cellular and molecular biology.

Bobby Anderson
Bobby Anderson, APRN, CNP, DNP Mayo Clinic – Managing Pain and Side Effects
Robert (Bobby) Anderson is a nurse practitioner in the department of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. He currently serves on the pulmonary-side of the lung cancer practice at Mayo Clinic and is intimately involved in lung cancer screening as well as the identification, diagnosis, staging, and treatment coordination of lung cancer along with a multi-disciplinary group of oncology, radiation oncology, and thoracic surgery experts. Prior to this role Bobby served in a multi-specialty intensive care unit at Mayo Clinic which heavily served the oncology and transplant populations. He previously served as a critical care nurse in the Medical intensive care unit and with the ECMO team at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He received his bachelor’s of nursing at Luther College and completed his doctoral studies at the University of IL Chicago. His research foci have been on proper positioning of the immobile critical care patient, imaging-guided vascular access device placement, as well as the use of virtual reality in patient education preparing for medical procedures. In addition to his clinical and research efforts,  Anderson also regularly serves as an educator both locally, nationally, and internationally.

 

 

Manish Patel
Manish Patel, DO – Understanding Mutations, Biomarkers, and Precision Medicine

Dr. Patel studied at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, receiving a Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 2001. Dr. Patel then pursued residency in Internal Medicine at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and completed a clinical research fellowship at Winthrop University Hospital. In 2006 he joined the Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation fellowship at the University of Minnesota and in July 2010 became a faculty member of the Division. In 2019, Dr. Patel became the associate program director for the hematology, oncology, and transplantation fellowship program. He also leads the experimental therapeutics phase I clinical program at the University of Minnesota.

Joseph Leach
Joseph Leach, MD – Navigating Clinical Trials

Dr. Leach of the Minnesota Health Fairview Cancer Center and Prime Therapeutics received his medical school training at the University of Minnesota and completed his fellowship at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. His specialties include: Benign Hematology, Hematologic Malignancy, Medical Oncology. Dr. Leach says the thing that he loves most about being an oncologist is the relationships he’s developed with his patients and their families over the years. He says there is something sacred about his job that he’ll never take for granted.

Carolyn Suerth Hudson,
Carolyn Suerth Hudson, RDN, LD – Nutrition and Immune Boosters

Carolyn is a registered and licensed dietitian through the Minnesota Board of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received her BASc in Nutrition from Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and completed her internship at Toronto General Hospital. Carolyn is a past president of the Minnesota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and past director on the board of the Dietitians of Canada. Carolyn has over 30 years of experience in the nutrition field in the United States and Canada. As a lifelong learner, Carolyn recently completed her certification as a Well Coach to enable her to understand the struggles clients face and to help them make changes.

Amit Sood
Amit Sood, MD – The Resilient Option: Addressing the Need of the Hour

Dr. Sood is the creator of the Resilient Option program. He is one of the world’s leading experts on resilience and wellbeing, and executive director of the Global Center for Resiliency and Wellbeing. He was also professor of medicine, and Chair for student life and wellness at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Sood has authored or co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed papers and is the author of several books including, The Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living, The Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness, Mindfulness Redesigned, SMART with Dr. Sood, The Resilience Journal, and Build Your Immune Resilience.

Nels Chellen

Nels Chellen, – Meditation and Mindfulness

Nels Chellen received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1996. He also became a Certified Instructor of Meditation in 2005. Chellen is founder and owner of Pure Meditation, a company which provides instruction and support for the practice of meditation. Pure Meditation exists to bring the community the opportunity to learn basic and advanced techniques in the life-enhancing and affirming practice of meditation.

Allison Breininger –  Caregivers : You’re Part of the Story

Allison Breininger has been a caregiver for her husband since 2011, through a bone marrow transplant and seven cancer diagnoses. Experiencing firsthand the ways that caregivers are unseen and unsupported, she founded the nonprofit The Negative Space, through which she shines light on the realities of caregiving, provides direct services to caregivers and educates and equips those who support them with concrete tools and strategies. She co-hosts the In Sickness podcast, provides individual coaching to caregivers nationwide, facilitates support groups and education sessions, partners with multiple organizations to more intentionally support caregivers, and sells caregiver gift boxes.

Bimaje Akpa

Bimaje Akpa, MD – Overcoming Insomnia and Other Sleep Disturbances

Dr. Akpa completed his Internal Medicine residency at Meharry Medical College, Nashville before moving to Knoxville where he completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine training at the University of Tennessee. He also completed a Sleep Fellowship at the University of Chicago after which he joined the faculty with the University of Minnesota. His research interests includes pharmacotherapy for narcolepsy and CPAP compliance in Sleep disordered breathing. Clinical interests include general pulmonology, sleep disordered breathing and Critical Care. In addition to his outpatient general pulmonary clinics at the Maple Grove M Health Fairview Clinics, Dr. Akpa works in the medical intensive care unit at both the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Fairview Southdale Hospital where he is involved in medical education for both the internal medicine and pulmonary critical care fellowship programs.

Clare Poulose (Survial2Strength) – Fitness (Strength/cardio training, stretching and flexibility)

Clare Poulose is an experienced cancer exercise specialist. She started Survival2Strength to help people who have had cancer to get stronger and healthier. Clare explains, “physical activity such as aerobic exercise, flexibility, and strength training have the same benefits for cancer survivors as they do for the general population.”

Russ Davies
Russ Davies (Survival2Strength) – Fitness (Strength/cardio training, stretching and flexibility)

Russ Davies is a medical device industry professional and has held senior executive roles in medical device businesses in Europe and the United States. He is a mechanical engineer by training, and holds an MBA from the Open Business School in the United Kingdom.

Russ earned his Certified Personal Fitness Trainer certification, including Corrective Exercise Specialist, Senior Fitness Specialist and Mental Toughness credentials with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and Cancer Exercise Trainer expertise from an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) training workshop. Russ applies his extensive knowledge and experience from his medical device background into personal fitness and wellness training.

ABOUT THIS EVENT: In 2018, A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation hosted the inaugural Midwest Lung Cancer Summit for patients and caregivers living with lung cancer. The steering committee (composed mostly of survivors and caregivers) identified three goals that were important to the success of this event:

  • Provide opportunities for people living with lung cancer to meet others on the journey in order to expand their support network;
  • Educate survivors and caregivers with the newest information, tools, and resources for improved health outcomes; and
  • Drive hope and positive energy.
